WHO WE SUPPORT
SAILORS
JAMES GOLDEN
“If you think someone else is responsible for the way you are, you cannot become the way you want to be” - Sadhguru. This quote resides deeply with my whole existence that I am in control of the destiny that comes to me. Outside influence is not what will define me, the true root of my existence will be determined by my willing to accept adversity for what it is and move forward in the path I choose. An impulsive reaction is just that, but a conscience response is how I choose to grow.
From the age of 6, sailing was a big interest of mine. I played soccer, basketball, football, and lacrosse throughout my childhood. I thought they were enjoyable sports to keep me active. But I never missed a sailing event for a lacrosse game. As my age progressed all other activities fell out of phase till I knew sailboat racing was what I was most passionate about.
In high school, I sailed on my high school team. This was an enjoyable part of my high school experience. Hours on the water after school made me fall in love with the sport. Around junior year (2019) I took up sailing the ILCA 7 after sizing out of the C420.
This choice inevitably brought me to where I am today being ranked in the United States in the ILCA 7 discipline.
On top of Singlehanded sailing in the ILCA 7, I have had success in the J70, Finn, and I am getting involved with the International 505.
The J70 class was established in 2012 and is still growing. This boat requires a team of 4 or 5 crew.
In 2019 I skippered the J70 Youth National Championship winning boat. Post covid in 2021, I successfully defended my title with a new Crew.
In January, I placed as the Top American in the Finn World Championship as well as 6th overall and 3rd under 23. This class was the former singlehanded class in the Olympics- before the ILCA. It requires a little more weight than the ILCA and requires a different set of technical skills.
I believe sailing different boats helps my sailing overall and will help me in the ILCA.
The ILCA 7 is one of the most physically demanding boats in the Olympics. Fifty years later the laser has developed into one of the most popular boats in the world. I want to use my passion and work ethic to become the most dominant sailor in the most physically demanding boat.
